Osteopathy is a form of healthcare that treats the whole body in a holistic way. It is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions, and doesn't focus on the symptoms, but looks for the underlying causes of the presenting symptoms.
A full history of the patient's medical condition, history and lifestyle, will help the osteopath diagnose the reasons for the patient's current symptoms.
We use a range of treatments including touch, physical manipulation, articulation, stretching, cranial and massage to ensure the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues are functioning smoothly together by improving blood and nerve supply, thus restoring the balance and enabling the proper functioning of the body's own healing mechanisms.
Each treatment is tailored to your individual circumstances.
Osteopaths will also provide advice on posture and exercise to help long-term recovery and prevent recurrence of symptoms.
The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) was established by the Osteopaths Act 1993 to regulate the profession, the first complementary health care profession to be accorded statuary regulation.
All osteopaths are required to renew their registration with GOsC each year, and are given an annual license to practise. The GOsC checks that all osteopaths have professional indemnity insurance, are in good health and of good character and have met the requirement for annual continuing professional development.
An osteopath's registration can be checked on the GOsC website www.osteopathy.org.uk
